We really enjoyed our overnight and tenting at Big Lake Park. The sites were wide for tenting with some large trees for shade. The tent area had just as good or better facilities as the RV section. Very friendly campground hosts. The huge flocks of pelicans we saw were a bonus. The only negative was the $5 bundles of firewood which had a lot of bark. The bark also meant we could not take any of it with us for the danger of pests across state lines. We visited May 2023.
Big Lake State Park is a great place to spend a few days. Camping sites are well kept and clean. The play set is in good shape and great for the kids. Restroom/showers on the north end of the camp grounds and restroom on the south end. Picnic area is great for day use. The shelter has two great big grills and has a historical marker about Lewis and Clark. Scout Island is also a great place for spending the day fishing. Camp host was very friendly along with the rest of the park staff.
We actually didn't stay, we just visited. Grandson left his phone at one of the picnic tables and my son called them. They went out and found the phone and held it for the 2 weeks we were on vacation. Awesome staff, very well maintained park.
If there were an option for 0 stars I would. I was visiting family on a Saturday, it was 110 degrees outside and they said we could not have a small inflatable pool. They also told us we had to park campers in a specific way. They are the FUN POLICE. don't bring kids if you want a fun time.
Loved it here. Cabins are nice! Full size refrigerator stove and microwave queen bed and a futon pull out bed.
Booked a pull-through site here for our 40’ DP with toad. We wanted this type of site because we wanted to just stay the night and not unhook the toad. The roads into this place are awful! The design of the roads in the campground seem built to accommodate small hybrid cars than RV’s. The turn onto the road for our site was a hair-pin and had a large tree at the center, absolutely impossible turn for a motor home. We ended up back on the road at 10pm…. The trees are not trimmed well for 12’ tall vehicles either. If you have a big rig, steer clear!
The staff were helpful and accommodating. Kayaking was affordable and equipment was in great shape. The camp sites were as described and restrooms/shower facilities better than expected. However nothing can make up for the disgusting state of "Big Lake." There is trash at every turn and water visibility is about 2 inches.
This is an odd place.
There is indeed a big oxbow lake here. The problem is the lake is surrounded by private housing, and these people PARTY on the weekend. There is no tranquility here. The park staff seem like they let the locals run the show.
As someone looking for a quiet camping getaway I was disappointed by the disrespectful other "campers" in the park. Children literally everywhere with no parents in sight, bikes strewn in the road, screaming until way after quiet hours, and I swear the parents just didn't care. Adults were just as bad; but I had the pleasure of experiencing them intoxicated in one form or another.
I thought I would rent a kayak, but the lake traffic was crazy. Didn't really feel there was much to kayak to considering most of the lake was people's homes.
